Best time to visit East Africa: month-by-month safari guide

Updated 2026-09-17 · 8 min read

East Africa is a year-round destination, but the wildlife you see, the trails you walk and the price you pay all shift with the seasons. This guide breaks the year down country by country so you can pick dates that match the trip you actually want.

The two dry seasons are the safari sweet spots

Most of the region follows two dry spells — roughly June to September and December to February. Vegetation thins out, animals concentrate around rivers and waterholes, and dirt tracks stay passable, which is why these months are the classic safari windows across Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The long rains (broadly March to May) and short rains (October to November) bring lush landscapes, migratory birds, newborn animals and noticeably lower lodge rates. Game viewing takes more patience because the bush is thick and animals spread out, but photographers love the dramatic skies and empty parks.

Great Migration timing in Kenya and Tanzania

The wildebeest migration is a continuous loop, not a single event, so the question is where the herds are rather than whether they are moving.

  • December to March — herds are on the southern Serengeti short-grass plains; calving season peaks around February and predator action is intense.
  • April to June — the herds move west and north through the Serengeti's western corridor as the long rains ease.
  • July to October — the famous Mara River crossings into Kenya's Maasai Mara; this is peak season, so permits, camps and flights sell out months ahead.
  • November — the herds drift back south into Tanzania with the short rains.

Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking in Uganda and Rwanda

Gorilla trekking runs all year in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Mgahinga and Volcanoes National Park. The drier stretches — June to September and December to February — give firmer, less slippery forest trails, which matters on steep climbs at altitude.

Rain is possible in any month in a rainforest, so pack a waterproof shell and gaiters whatever your dates. Permits are strictly limited every day, so book trekking months before you fix flights.

Egypt and the Nile

Egypt is most comfortable from October to April, when Luxor, Aswan and the Nile valley are warm rather than punishing and Cairo sightseeing is pleasant all day. December and January are the busiest weeks at the Pyramids and Abu Simbel.

May to September brings very high desert heat inland. Trips are still possible with early starts and midday breaks, and the Red Sea coast stays workable for diving and beach time year-round.

So when should you book?

If wildlife density and river crossings top your list, aim for July to October and reserve early. If you want gorillas plus fewer crowds and softer prices, look at late January to February or the shoulder weeks of June and November. For a combined East Africa and Egypt trip, October and early December balance both climates well.
